About Goa
Situated on the Malabar Coast, the land of fun, sun and elation Goa is smallest state of India in terms of area and forth smallest in term of population. Goa has tropical climate. The state of Goa is surrounded by the state of Karnataka to the east and south, Maharashtra to the north and Arabian Sea to the west. This tinny state is spread in the area of 3,702 square km with a coastline of 65 miles. Goa is also called the beach capital of India and famous for its beautiful and golden beaches.

There are two major rivers in Goa – Mandovi and Zuari. The capital of Goa is Panaji also called Panjim. Vasco-da-Gama is the largest city in the state. Other important cities of Goa are Marmagao, Madgaon (Margao) and Ponda.

On the world horizon, Goa is one of the most popular tourist destinations. A tiny emerald land on the western coast of India, Goa is famous among tourists from around the world for its stunning beaches dotted with palm coconut trees, beautiful rivers & lakes, cruises, water fun, exotic cuisine and mouth-watering seafood, beach parties such as trance party, nightlife, casino, festivals such as Goa Carnival – a threes days non stop festival of fun and elation, magnificient churches, temples and wildlife.

In ancient time the real name of Goa was Konkan and the people of Goa were called Konkani and so their language was also called Konkani. Goa is the smallest state in the sub-continent of India but this tinny state is has prosperous history. Around third century, Goa was the part of Mughal Empire. Later Dutch, English, French and Portuguese also began to struggling for the rule over the Goa. Finally, in 1510 Portuguese became success to conquer over Goa and they ruled over Goa for four centuries.

One can still see influences of Portuguese in Goa’s culture and everyday life. After independence of India, Goa was under the rule of Portuguese for fourteen years. Goa became independent in 1961. It was declared a union territory then, and after a constitutional amendment, Goa was declared an independent state in 1987.

Portuguese his discovered Goa during their seafaring in 1510. Alfonso De Albuquerque conquered Goa and set his empire Portuguese Kingdom in 1510. His men married with the widows of Muslim defenders by the orders of Alfonso De Albuquerque. Behind to do so his main purpose was to converts the locals into Christians. But somehow his plan was not completely successful and the Portuguese began to follow the Indian living style. The Portuguese built many architecturally beautiful structures and churches. One can still see the influence of Portuguese in the buildings of Goa. The cuisine, culture and living style of Goa is also influenced with the Portuguese even now.  

Today, Goa has a prosperous historical legacy and one can see here a unique amalgamation of the past and modernity. Even today, Christianity is the religion which is followed by major people of Goa after Hinduism.
